what to do whilst marking student essays during a locust plague

well the locusts are here and a good essay is hard to find (although you could do worse than dip into best australian essays 2004 companion volume to the excellent best australian stories 2004 edited by frank moorhouse which features a story by wagga's own i.j.oog) and when marking student essays it is a good idea to have something else at hand the same time ...

... since i recently had a scare (when filemaker pro 7 wouldn't open) i decided to review my back up strategy as well as ensure that i had install discs on hand for all the major software programmes which i use everyday as well as the operating system which of course is mac o/s 10.3.8 - it is also a good time to ensure i have installed all the updates that are available...

so here are the ten discs i think need to be able to put my hand on at any time... they are all cd-rw except 10 which is dvd=rw

1. microsoft user data (the latest backup of all my email etc - just a straight dump to cd-rw) - done
2. mac o/s 10.3 + 10.3.8 combo updater + the latest security update - to do
3. filemaker pro 7 + the latest update (7.0.3) - done
4. microsoft office 2004 + the newly released update (11.1.0) - doing that now
5. diskwarrior - done
6. norton's 3.0 - done
7. ilife + al the updaters + shareware tools for itunes etc - to do
8. photoshop cs - to do
9. a collection of useful utilities ; shareware and drivers - to do
10. a dvd containing all mp3s which have been given one star or more - to do

my new 80gb 2.5" bus powered hard drive should arrive on friday and using the wonderful synk i'll be able to ensure most of my files are handy in the case of any meltdowns

and then let the locusts come ...
